Incidence of Institutions on Objective Aspects of Quality of Life in Older
Adults in Zamora, Michoacán
ABSTRACT
Aging is a natural and irreversible process that affects biological, psychological, and social aspects. It
represents a growing challenge for modern societies, given that the number of adults considered to be
in the aging stage is increasing worldwide. As a result of scientific developments, specifically advances
in medicine, which help people live longer lives compared to previous times, coupled with the decline
in births in recent decades, it can be observed that the world's population is aging. Thus, it could be
thought that humanity as a whole has made progress in achieving longer lives, however, this idea would
have to be accompanied by a better way of living this advance in longevity, in such a way that it is
thought about how to live with quality, hence the concept of the quality of life of older adults arises.
This idea encompasses both objective aspects in people's lives and subjective aspects of well-being and
personal satisfaction. Thus, quality of life is impacted by various factors, including access to health,
social inclusion, and respect for their rights, which translates into an opportunity and a challenge for
society and especially for institutions. This research aims to expose the incidence of formal and informal
institutions in relation to the objective aspects of the quality of life of older adults, according to the
concept of quality of life proposed by the United Nations Organization (UN) and the World Health
Organization (WHO) within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the
Decade of Healthy Aging. The research is carried out in Zamora, Michoacán, Mexico. Where a large
part of the population is within the framework of social deficiencies, and more than half of the older
adults live in this situation. A quantitative, correlational, non-experimental research type is used.
Applied to a population sample through surveys. These interviews are applied in various areas of the
aforementioned municipality with the purpose of obtaining diverse samples that represent the entire
sample. Finally, it is sought to participate in the creation of information repositories that serve as a
starting point for future research, since the topic tends to be related to a wide network of agents and has
deep socioeconomic effects on the well-being of not only the group under study, but also on society in
general. With this, the results show an approximation to the reality that the elderly live in the
municipality, with respect to the support they receive from formal and informal institutions, to live the
last stage of their lives with quality, and to understand the contribution that these institutions provide.
