Diagnosis of Work Stress in Teachers at a Higher Education Institute in
Lago Agrio, Using an ISTAS 21 Questionnaire for Planning Preventive
Measures and Improving Working Conditions
ABSTRACT
The preventive culture in occupational safety at the Martha Bucaram de Roldós Higher Technological
Institute is analyzed, highlighting the perceptions and safety practices among teaching and
administrative staff. The research was carried out through surveys and interviews, covering topics such
as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety training, and institutional responses to
workplace incidents. The findings reveal a low level of use of PPE, as only 13.3% of respondents always
use it, while 36.7% never use it. In addition, 86.7% claim not to have reported incidents or dangerous
situations, and 46.7% consider that the institutional response to incidents is ineffective. Although 80%
of respondents feel that management is concerned about their workplace safety, 73.3% say they do not
have enough time or resources to comply with safety practices. Likewise, 93.3% indicate that there are
no incentives for those who comply with these measures. Although 60% have participated in safety
programs, the lack of follow-up and the lack of interest of 73.3% of colleagues in safety practices reflect
a significant challenge in promoting a strong preventive culture. Key areas for improvement are
identified, such as strengthening training on the proper use of PPE, implementing awareness campaigns,
and designing clear and accessible protocols for incident management. It is also suggested to establish
incentives and rewards that motivate staff to comply with safety regulations and create safety
committees with representatives from all areas. In conclusion, the lack of training, resources and
awareness about occupational safety is negatively affecting preventive practices in the institution.
Therefore, a comprehensive strategy is proposed that includes training, incentives and committed
leadership to foster a robust preventive culture that improves the safety and well-being of all members
of the university community.
