Intoxicación por plomo y su impacto en la práctica clínica: artículo de revisión

Resumen

Existen registros del uso del plomo desde hace ya varios milenos, su exposición representa actualmente uno de los problemas más notables a escala mundial en la salud pública, siendo así que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) estima cerca de 1,06 millones de muertes cada año debido a su intoxicación. A pesar de que esto es conocido, el plomo sigue siendo ampliamente utilizada en la industria para la fabricación de productos. No existe una concentración sérica segura de plomo, sin embargo, los efectos tóxicos tienden a aparecer cuando el plomo en sangre supera los 10 μg/dL en los adultos, mientras que en niños la intoxicación se puede presentar con concentraciones séricas mucho más bajas. La presentación clínica es demasiado inespecífica, por lo que hay que tener un alto nivel de sospecha para poder realizar el diagnostico. Las manifestaciones clínicas tras la exposición aguda al plomo van desde irritabilidad, cefalea, Dolor abdominal, dolor articular, fatiga, hasta lesión renal aguda y encefalopatía que puede provocar delirio, convulsiones y coma. En cambio, la intoxicación Crónica puede ocasionar Hipertensión Arterial, Enfermedad Renal Crónica, anemia y déficits neurocognitivos.
