Evaluación de la efectividad de protocolos de retención post-ortodoncia (fijo, removible o combinado) a 1-5 años

Resumen

La retención en ortodoncia es esencial. Evita la recidiva dental, que ocurre cuando los dientes regresan a su posición inicial tras el tratamiento. Aproximadamente, el 70% de los pacientes experimentan este fenómeno después de retirar los aparatos. Existen tres tipos de retenedores: fijos, removibles y combinados. Los fijos mantienen los dientes en su lugar de forma continua, sin depender del paciente. Sin embargo, pueden causar problemas en las encías, como acumulación de placa. Los removibles, como los de Hawley y Essix, ofrecen flexibilidad y facilidad de higiene, pero su efectividad depende del tiempo de uso, que debe seguir el paciente. Los combinados, que mezclan características de los anteriores, son ideales para pacientes con mayor riesgo de recidiva, pues ofrecen más estabilidad a largo plazo. Los estudios demuestran que los fijos son efectivos a corto plazo, pero los combinados brindan mayor estabilidad con una tasa de éxito de hasta el 89%. En conclusión, los retenedores combinados suelen ser la opción más eficaz. No obstante, es importante personalizar el tratamiento según las necesidades de cada paciente.
