Resumen

Las enfermedades neurodegenerativas y su relación con el sistema inmune y digestivo han despertado un interés importante en las ciencias de la salud por su impacto social y económico. El objetivo del presente estudio es contextualizar la evidencia emergente sobre el papel de la microbiota intestinal en las enfermedades neurodegenerativas y del neurodesarrollo, para lo cual se llevó a cabo una revisión documental de publicaciones científicas sobre el tema. Se encontró que la microbiota intestinal tiene un papel decisivo en las interacciones bidireccionales entre intestino y sistema nervioso y muchos de los efectos parecen estar asociados a ciertas cepas probióticas, lo que pudiese constituir una nueva estrategia adyuvante para el manejo de trastornos neurológicos.
